The bitch is lying!

He pictured the scene in his head again, tried to remember how Sheehan's hands had been, if there was anything in them. They had been empty.

Hadn't they?

The headache increased, throbbing incessantly again. He focused on Rouch, mirroring the kata shecycled through, remembering her moves from past encounters.

GRANT LED THE PANTHERS down into the valley. He sat in the passenger's seat of the jeep, one foot braced against the dashboard to give him more stability. The Panthers had liberated the vehicles from one of the National Guard posts Hooker had located with his treasure hunting.

The roiling mass of rock had poured into the valley, cascading across the highway. In seconds, forward progress was made impossible by the sheer tonnage of rock. The first two pack wags locked up their brakes and came to shuddering stops. One of the vehicles behind them slammed into the rear of the one ahead of it.

The avalanches in the rear cut off an escape route, and the rock and debris swept over the last vehicle, crushing it as it rolled over. As the dusty haze settled over it, Grant didn't think there were any survivors, which suited him fine.

Men poured out of the stalled pack wags, and the rear gunners opened up with the box-fed machine guns. Their full-throated death roars punctuated the night.

Panther snipers lined the ridges on both sides of the valley. Their training put them on their targets. The hollow booms of the 7.62 mm ammo cut through the ripping snarl of the machine guns, cutting down the sec men before they were engaged by the mobile forces.

"Here!" Grant ordered his driver.

The man nodded and hit the brakes, whipping the jeep sideways in a spray of rock. He stopped only inches from the lead wag's front bumper, a welded section of four-inch pipe filled with concrete.

Grant pushed himself out of the seat, followed by Reba and the three men who rode on the rear deck. He kept the M-14 up, firing twice at the man behind the pack wag's steering wheel. The bullets punched holes through the windshield, jerking the man in the seat, dropping a corpse in their wake.

Stepping high, Grant pushed a foot against the front bumper, propelling himself up on the wag's hood. It collapsed and bent under his weight, but he leaped onto the cab and took the high ground. He brought the M-14 to his shoulder and fired a round through a sec man's head. Before the dead man hit his knees, Grant acquired another target. The sec man turned, sweeping around with his shotgun, and got two bullets through his lungs before he could squeeze the trigger.

Reba stood at Grant's side, a Colt .45 booming in her fist. He knew from his doppelganger's memories that Reba stayed at his side during battles, relaying his instructions over the comm link.

Half of the jeeps stopped and disgorged Panther warriors. The other half maintained a circle around the stalled pack wags, racing constantly to pick off sec men who tried to flee the battle zone.
